I'm supposed to be doing homework, but on my way home I found that I couldn't stop thinking, and I loved the direction my thoughts took as they spiraled out of control. For now, all I want to do is write.
I was listening to Boards of Canada's The Campfire Headphase in the car. It's an album that has definitely influenced my thoughts on music, and how music should be. I started mentally listing the albums that have influenced me the most, and in what specific way they've influenced me. Anytime I think about this there's one band that always pops into my head first...Godspeed You Black Emperor. Their albums (more particularly Lift Your Skinny Fists, but all of them are wonderful) have such an amazing effect on me. I used to listen to them all day when I worked at Phone Directories, and when I took my headphones off I felt out of place, almost uncomfortable, like I'd thought I was somewhere else the entire time. I was in a trance. There aren't many people who can really handle listening to them due to impatience, afterall the songs are 15 minutes long on average. The music swells and builds up to a powerful climax, and after it's over my chest feels heavy and full. I don't really know what to say. It's amazing.
Two nights ago when I was on my way home (moments away from Jorgen's house) I saw a cat get hit by a car. I barely made it home, and the second I walked in the door I started bawling. I received a hug, but was basically told to suck it up. "Cats get hit by cars, it happens." Way to make it worse...
I remember driving down an icy backroad in the middle of last winter, as I crept along the slick road I suddenly saw three cats sitting in front of me, who didn't budge as my car got closer and closer. I slammed on my breaks and twisted the wheel. I ended up hitting a giant pile of snow instead of the cats, and I realized I'd probably prefer to get a bump on my head rather than run over any animals.
And once, almost in the exact same spot on that road, I had to stop for a cat that was in the road. It walked up next to my car, so I rolled my window down to try and shoo it away. I leaned over to the passenger seat of my car to grab something and when I looked up, the cat was gone. I poked my head out the window, and there it was, right by my door, crouching down and getting ready to spring up into my car. I had to open my door to get it to run away.
For some reason that reminds me of something that happened just a couple of weeks ago that was probably one of the most amazing things that's ever happened to me while driving. I was going down a road that's pretty close to Geneva Road. The nice thing about the roads down there is that you can turn a corner and suddenly be surrounded by fields filled with cows, horses, and tractors. Unfortunately, this particular road I was driving down is about to be ruined. Right now, you can coast down it and be surrounded by fields on both sides, but in a couple of years they'll be torn apart. A private school is being built on one side, and the other is being turned into a housing subdivision. It was about 4 p.m., and I was heading to give my mom a ride home from work. I glanced over my right shoulder and noticed a bunch of birds flying next to my window. As they flew, my eyes darted around and I realized that the entire flock of birds was flying with my car. There were birds on every side of me. It only lasted for a couple of seconds, but after it was over I was left smiling like an idiot and replaying it in my head. It was wonderful.
